Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Be aware of the time of day. If it's during rush hour, obviously it's going to be crowded, but there are other factors. If the station is near the Broadway theaters, those stops will be crowded right before and after shows. Be aware of matinée day.
Step2
Subway cars are most crowded on the ends. This is where the majority of the exits are. Try boarding the train a few cars in to increase your chances of a better seat.
Step3
When waiting for a train, wait by the polls. They line up pretty close to where the train doors open. This will put you in a good position to get a seat.
Step4
If you don't get a seat, don't fret. Most subway rides are less than ten minutes and rarely more than twenty. Stand in the center of the car to minimize the number of times you're forced to move because of the flow of people traffic.
Step5
Finally, if you plan to take several trips around the city in the course of a day or week, consider buying an unlimited card. You will save money, and it might encourage you to be more adventurous and take a trip you might not have taken. You know what they say about the road less traveled.
