Things You'll Need:
- Persistent
- Patience
- An eye for bargains
-
Step 1
Assess the situation. What will it take to complete your wardrobe? If you are going into banking your wardrobe will look dramatically different from someone in graphic design.
-
Step 2
Hit the big name stores first. Sounds crazy, right? But, you will get an idea of current styles and selections, and how much they will cost you.
-
Step 3
Run, don't walk, to the nearest discount shop. Often your best bets will be TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, DSW, Stein Mart and Filene’s Basement. They all carry business attire at a fraction of the cost.
-
Step 4
Build around basic choices. Look for suits sold as separates and/or buy a couple in neutral colors- black, brown, navy or gray. Next, try to find additional jackets that will complement your pants/skirts. Discount stores often carry overstock brand name suits for 50-75 percent or more off the retail price.
-
Step 5
Buy shirts that are versatile enough to go with two or more of your pants/skirts and/or suits. Basic colors such as white and cream, as well as bright blues, reds and pinks can go a long way toward completing your wardrobe.
-
Step 6
Accessorize in moderation. Accessories can make an outfit, and can make it look completely different if need be. When looking at jewelry and shoes, keep your employer in mind. How conservative do you need to be? Check out stores like DSW for great deals on shoes as well as other accessories.
-
Step 7
Putting it all together. You will not be able to find all the items you want at one store like the big retailers. This is where persistence pays off. By visiting several stores you can put everything together and have a great wardrobe for less.
