A creative way to learn how to write dialogue!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pen
  • paper
  • headphones
  • some sort of portable music player
  1. Step 1

Find a place that has plenty of people. Try a park, shopping mall, coffee shop, or cafeteria.

  2. Step 2

Get comfortable at a table or bench and open up your notebook. Be sure you are sitting near people that are having some sort of a conversation. Put your headphones on and settle down.

  3. Step 3

Pretend to press the play button. Leave the player off and pretend to listen to the music as you really eavesdrop on the people next to you. Be discreet and polite. No nasty comments!

  4. Step 4

Listen to the conversation. At this point you can do one of two things: write down as much dialogue as possible or take notes. If you choose to take notes: think of how they sound, lisps and accents, pauses, specific words or phrases, and nervous tics of the conversation such as tapping a foot, slurring words, or playing with silverware. Really focus on the way people around you sound in different situations.
