Making food in the kitchen is one of the best ways to spend time with your children. It is even more rewarding when they get to help. It not only is this fun for you, but it instills skills your kids can use for a lifetime. There is nothing simpler to introduce your kids to the kitchen than making a simple PB&J.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Bread
  • Butter knife
  • Spoon
  • Sponge with soap and water

Step1
Get out all the ingredients in advance. You don’t want your kids waiting around in the kitchen with nothing to do while you hunt for the jar of jelly. They will become bored rather quickly.
Step2
Make sure you have a sponge with soap and water at the ready. Jelly on your counter tops, or cutting board, can make a sticky mess in a hurry.
Step3
Open the jars of peanut butter and jelly. Their little hands may have a problem with that.
Step4
Let them in on the fun. Let them lay out the bread, spread the peanut butter and jelly and smash it together.
Step5
Make a mess. Show them that it is alright to make a little mess when putting the sandwich together.
Step6
Teach them to clean. Having a mess with the sandwich is only fun if you teach them to clean up afterwards.
Step7
Enjoy your sandwiches together.

Tips & Warnings

  • The sponge with soap and water comes in handy for cleaning your little ones' faces afterwards as well.
  • Don’t over-teach. Telling them they are spreading the jelly wrong, then taking it away and showing them yourself will only cause them to lose interest.
