Things You'll Need:
- a go-getter attitude
- tough skin
- passion about the journalism field
-
Step 1
IF you are looking to get into the print journalism world, you must first be willing do internships or freelance work to build your portfolio. You'll need to gather news clips (published work).
You must also be willing to relocate at some point.
Here are some great sites that lists internships:
www.journalismjobs.com; http://members.tripod.com/~journalismcenter/internships.html; http://www.asne.org/index.cfm?id=2 -
Step 2
Prepare a resume and a cover letter and snail mail and e-mail them to various news organizations of choice. In your cover letter, express your passion about the field (editors like that). Here is a great site about how you should go about it: http://www.freep.com/legacy/jobspage/toolkit/cover_interns.htm
-
Step 3
Do not only send out five resumes and call it quits. Send out as many resumes as you can to various organizations. Looking for a job IS a fulltime job. Follow up (in two weeks) with an e-mail or telephone call to the paper's HR Department or an editor. Also, take some time out to browse the Web site of the organization you have expressed interest in. You'll need to have knowledge about an organization if you want to work there.
-
Step 4
DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED. The newspaper world is competitive and you've got to have a go-getter attitude to make it.
