Blois (pronounced "bluewa") is a picturesque town with a medieval castle overlooking the Loire River. Well worth visiting. Both the town and the castle are walkable, warm and inviting. The cafes are welcoming and the local wines exquisite. It's best to visit during the summer when you can experience the full offering of tourist activities but the area is worth visiting at any time of the year.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Local currency for entrance into the castle and to purchase souvenirs, if desired
  • Driving map (if driving)
  • Camera or camcorder

Step1
Blois is a small town that grew to support the medieval castle. The town is very walkable and inviting and in 1498 became a royal town until
moved the court to Paris centuries later. With cobblestone streets and alleys that date back to the Middle Ages you are walking along streets strolled over and worn down over the centuries.
Step2
The castle started out as a fortress and after becoming part of the royal holdings in 1498 became a royal residence. All the additions and renovations over time offer a interesting sample of period architecture and ambiance. Each wing offers a look at a different architecture style making the castle, looked at as a whole, as pieced together without any thought of making a smooth transition from one time period and style to another.
Step3
There were many noteworthy events at this castle. One such is Catherine de Medici and her hiding place for her poisons. Another is Joan of Arc setting off for the siege of Orleans from here.
Step4
The castle was occupied by the German army during WWII and liberated by American soldiers in 1944.
