Traveling in the car can be fun for you and your dog, but let's face it: Hanging his head out the window isn't very safe. To keep your dog (and yourself) safe in the car while you travel, here's what you need to do.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A carrier (for small dogs) that will attach to your seats or the cargo area of your SUV
  • A harness (for big dogs) that will attach to your seats or the cargo area of your SUV
  • Harness or collar and leash
  • Pet blanket
  1. Step 1

Put the halter on your small dog and leave it on, so that when you have to take your dog out of the carrier during your car trip, you can get the leash on him easily. For larger dogs, depending on the type of harness you buy it may double as a leash.

  2. Step 2

Place your dog in the carrier, along with his or her favorite pet blanket and the container of water. (If you have a hard-sided carrier, get the water bottles that will strap to the door.) For bigger dogs on a harness, put the blanket down in the seat or cargo area where they will be strapped in.

  3. Step 3

Secure your carrier, with your small dog inside, into your car. Be sure to read all the instructions. Do the same for your large dog and his harness.

  4. Step 4

Stop at rest areas that have designated pet areas. You need to get out and stretch your legs and use the restroom after a couple of hours in the car, and so will your dog.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your dog's preferred blanket is too big for the carrier, buy a smaller one far enough in advance to let your dog get used to it. A little treat incentive doesn't hurt, either.
  • Plan for emergencies, including packing food for your dog. If all else fails, order a burger without any condiments or toppings from any fast food place.
  • Always have the leash securely on your dog and looped around your wrist before getting out of the car.
  • Do not let your dog roam loose in your car.
  • Driving with your dog is like driving with your kids: no matter what they do, keep your attention on the road. If you have to deal with them, pull off to the side of the road first.
