Limit your dog's activity after surgery.

Responsible pet owners know that spaying and neutering helps reduce the population of unwanted animals. The procedures also decrease a pet's desire to roam or display aggression. Neutering is a surgical procedure in which both of a dog's testicles are removed. Provide specific care for your dog after surgery to prevent infection or other complications from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the instructions of the veterinarian. She may have instructions specific to your dog.

    • 2

Give your dog water only for the first day. Offer a portion of his normal meal, if he appears to be hungry. Monitor your dog for vomiting, which is normal after surgery.

    • 3

Limit physical activity to prevent the stitches from coming out. This is especially true for small dogs. Running, jumping, and going up or down stairs can affect the stitches and slow down the healing process. Keep your pet in a kennel, if possible, and take him for walks on a leash.

Use collars to keep your dog away from the stitches. Some dogs may want to lick or bite at their stitches. Keep the incision area away from dirt and other potentially infectious materials. Protecting the surgical area will facilitate healing.
