Decorating with alphabet flash cards is a fresh, fun way to make a visual statement in a room. The cards look wonderful displayed in a baby’s nursery, a child’s play room, a library or even your living room--especially if you’re a writer or avid reader. Read on to learn how to decorate using the beautiful alphabet flash cards that are so widely available today.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • One or more sets of alphabet flash cards
  • Picture frames, shelving or other display methods

Step1
Purchase one or more sets of colorful, graphic alphabet flash cards. You can buy flash cards at a local educational supply store or search eBay for vintage sets. Another good resource is children’s décor retailer Land of Nod, which offers a variety of large flash cards designed for display.
Step2
One way to display your flash cards is to set them on a narrow shelf or ledge that surrounds the room. This works particularly well if you want to display an entire flash card set in alphabetical order, and it looks wonderful in a nursery or play room.
Step3
If you have a large collection of alphabet flash cards, choose the best ones from each set and sandwich them between glass in floating picture frames. Arrange the frames in a grouping on a shelf or bookcase for the strongest visual impact. (If your cards are too thick to fit inside a frame, prop them on plate stands instead.) The framing method works especially well with many cards of varying sizes.
Step4
As an alternative, create a grouping of wall frames to display your favorite alphabet flash cards. Oversized flash cards, such as 8-inch by 10-inch versions, work best for this method.
Step5
Can’t choose your favorites? Create a temporary flash card collage on a magnet board or corkboard, then swap out the cards whenever you wish. This allows you to create seasonal flash card displays, such as “W is for witch” at Halloween and “G is for gift” at Christmas.
Step6
If you can devote several shelves to your alphabet flash card collection, mix in a few other fun alphabet items, too. Examples include children’s wooden alphabet blocks, bookends shaped like single letters of the alphabet or a framed swatch of ABC fabric.
Step7
If your flash cards are small and light, arrange a few on memo clips and group them together on a shelf or table.
Step8
You can also create a fun table by grouping alphabet flash cards underneath a glass top. This, too, can be changed seasonally or whenever the mood strikes. It’s a good way to display part of your collection when you run out of shelf space.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you display alphabet flash cards, you’ll probably see only one side of the card. That’s why the best flash cards for display have a single letter and a related picture on the same side of the card.
