Going home for the holidays is a time honored tradition, but what about the family cat? If you can't bear to part with Fluffy over the holidays, and want to take your cat with you, this is how you do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pet carrier with an attachment to secure it inside your vehicle. Ask your local pet store if you're unsure.
  • Small container for water that will fit inside the carrier and preferably one with sides steep enough to prevent sloshing
  • Leash and a halter
  • Pet blanket
  1. Step 1

Put the halter on your cat and leave it on so that when you have to take your cat out of the carrier during your car trip you can get the leash on him easily.

  2. Step 2

Place your cat in the carrier, along with her favorite pet blanket and the container of water. (If you have a hard-sided carrier, get the water bottles that will strap to the door.)

  3. Step 3

Secure your cat carrier into your car. Be sure to read all the instructions. You wouldn't ride in your car without your seatbelt, be sure your cat doesn't either.

  4. Step 4

Stop at rest areas that have designated pet areas. You want to get out and stretch your legs and use the restroom after a couple of hours in the car, so does your cat.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your cat's preferred blanket is too big for the carrier, buy a smaller one far enough in advance to let your cat get used to it. A little catnip incentive doesn't hurt, either.
  • Plan for emergencies, including packing food for your cat. If all else fails, order a burger without anything from any fast food place.
  • Always have you cat on a leash before getting it out of the carrier, and be sure the leash is looped around your wrist.
  • Do not let your cat roam loose in your car.
  • Driving with your pet is like driving with your kids: no matter what they do, keep your attention on the road. If you have to deal with them, pull off to the side of the road first.
