Clean and Lubricate a Sliding Glass Door

Have you ever tried to open your glass sliding door to go outside on your patio and have been faced with a sticky and resistant door? This is because over time dirt and grime and get caught in the track and cause the lubricant to wear thin, which in turn makes sliding that door open increasingly difficult. Here is how you get that glass sliding door to open and close smoothly once again.

From Quick Guide: Glass Doors 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lubricating grease
  • Vacuum
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Waste bag
  1. Step 1

Purchase the supplies. A short trip to the hardware store will allow you to buy the supplies necessary for cleaning the track on your sliding door.

  2. Step 2

Open the door. With your supplies in hand, set them down near the glass door. Slide the glass door all the way open so you can begin to clean the track.

  3. Step 3

Use the screw driver to dig the grime out. Many times dirt and grime will build in the door track causing more friction when you open the door. You need to scrape out this grime using your flathead screwdriver. This process is the longest and may take you as long as 15 to 20 minutes. Use the head of the screw driver and scrape the dirt and grime loose.

  4. Step 4

Vacuum the dirt and the grime. Now that you have scraped the dirt and grime loose, use your vacuum hose to clean up the mess.

  5. Step 5

Lubricate the door with the lubricating grease. Using your index finger, apply ample amounts of the grease on the tip of your finger and thoroughly coat the sliding door track.

  6. Step 6

Open and close the door repeatedly. Do this process for at least five minutes, this will allow the track to become fully lubricated.

  7. Step 7

When the door slides smoothly you are done. Once your glass sliding door is opening and closing smoothly you have successfully cleaned and lubricated it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don’t have a screw driver, try using another sturdy object to clean the door track with.
  • Be careful you don’t accidentally close the sliding glass door on your fingers.
