Step 1
Read the news. It doesn't matter if you're getting your news online, in a newspaper, through news magazines, or on NPR--if you're up to date on your current events, it will be much easier to have conversations with people around you. The New Yorker is a great combination of sophisticated humor, fiction, and news.
-
Step 2
Get a list of the greatest 100 movies of all time and watch a few of them. Classics like "Citizen Kane," "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Casablanca" are not to be missed! People often make references to these films, and it will be hard to catch their meaning without watching them.
-
Step 3
Go out on the town: see movies, go to plays, see the orchestra and enjoy the city that's nearest to you.
-
Step 4
Get outta here! Travel whenever you can, even if it's just a weekend trip to the next state over. Traveling will help you to understand how different cultures live and appreciate the city that you're from.
