Artists are bold creatures, but there is one thing that fills us with terror: the loss of creativity. In reality, creativity is never lost, it just may be in a slump for a variety of reasons. Whatever the cause, the main goal is to revamp creativity before our artist minds become locked in our thoughts and we go insane.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Relax. When we try too hard to create, this massive wall tends to form in your brain, blocking off any creative juices that want to seep inside. Chill a bit, massage your mind and let the energy flow.
Step2
Do something new. At least once a week make it a point to go somewhere you’ve never been. It doesn't have to be Argentina or Egypt, unless you can afford it, but rather somewhere like that South Side park you’ve never checked out or the new branch of the public library.
Step3
Embrace other art. Nothing can jump start the creative juices quicker than a trip to the museum, a jaunt down a mural-coated street or a local poetry reading.
Step4
Go au natural. Not naked, but trekking through nature. It’s hard not to be creative in the shadow of a majestic purple mountain or at the brim of a rollicking sea. The Romantic poets knew this well, celebrating daffodils and clouds. Heck, you may as well get naked, too, if no one else is around and you won’t get arrested.

Tips & Warnings

  • Workshops are another good way to surround yourself with other art that may induce you to create your own.
  • Switching mediums will also give you a new take on creativity. Painters can go from acrylic to oils. Writers can go for poems instead of essays. Sculptors might want to check out metal if they’re used to working with clay.
  • You may even want to take on a new art, like painting if you're a poet, to revamp your brain, too.
  • Don’t get stingy. Once your creativity begins to flow again, don’t think you’ll exhaust the supply. As Maya Angelou said, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
  • Don’t think you need to have money to have creativity. Many creativity revamping activities are completely free, save for that trip to Egypt.
