In Byzantine cathedrals and ancient Roman cities, mosaics created long-lasting, beautiful decorations. If you’re interested in bringing that same grandeur into your own home, a mosaics class can teach you the skills you need. Here’s how to learn to make mosaics in Indianapolis.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money for class fees
  • Any required class materials or tools
  1. Step 1

Sign up for an introductory mosaics class through the Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis continuing studies program. The class, which generally meets one evening per week, is taught by a renowned professional mosaic artist. You’ll complete two mosaic projects, usually a birdbath and a serving tray, and learn the basic techniques for designing, gluing and grouting your pieces.

  2. Step 2

The same class is sometimes offered through Lawrence Township Community Education. If the location or time is more convenient for you, sign up through that program instead.

  3. Step 3

Did you enjoy your experience? Sign up for the intermediate mosaics class offered through IUPUI. This is more of an “open studio” experience, where you’ll choose your own project and materials and work on the project with the instructor’s guidance.

  4. Step 4

Check the schedule of classes at the Indianapolis Art Center. As you build your mosaic skills, you may want to take the “Crafting Tiles” course, which teaches you to create your own tiles for use in mosaic designs.
