With Christmas commercials starting before Halloween even arrives, it can be difficult not to get swept up in the commercialism of Christmas. If you choose to though, you can avoid becoming materialistic at Christmas.
Consider what Christmas means to you and what it has meant to your family in past years. Go back and read books that you read as a child, watch Christmas movies, or go to church to get the feeling of Christmas (without hitting the mall).
Step2
Instead of buying gifts for friends and family, give them things that you've made. Photographs, poems, handmade quilts, scrapbooks, or photo calendars are all great gifts that loved ones are bound to appreciate.
Step3
The real meaning of Christmas is love. Spend more time with your loved ones, and make an effort to get together with people you haven't seen for awhile. Make it clear that this is not a gift giving meeting to avoid awkward moments.
Step4
Decorate! Living in a festive environment will get you in the mood for the holidays. Get creative with your tree, make ornaments with your family, and then sit back to enjoy your handiwork.
