Whether you are in France for work or for a holiday you are bound to meet some of the local French people. It is possible that you may be invited for dinner or for a pre dinner drink known as a aperitif. If you are unsure of French etiquette in these circumstances, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A French dictionary or phrase book
  1. Step 1

Learn some basic French or some simple French phrases. If you do not speak French, knowng some basic phrases such as "Bonsoir," will endear you to the host of the evening.

  2. Step 2

You will be expected to address anyone that is present and is substantially older than you as "Madame" or "Monsieur," and you should never address them by their first name unless they tell you it is ok to do so.

  3. Step 3

Always use the polite form of "Vous" and not "Tu" when addressing people you do not know very well.

  4. Step 4

Kiss any children that are present. The rule of thumb is that if there are children present you will be expected to give them a kiss on each cheek.

  5. Step 5

Remember to leave before dinner is served if you have been invited to drink an aperitif! An invitation for an aperitif is an invitation just for a pre dinner drink and not actually an invitation for dinner.
