1. Download.com Open your web browser and go to www.download.com which is the CNET DOWNLOAD web site.
2. In the search filed, type what you are looking for. For example, firewall. In the dropdown menu next to the search field, select software. Then click the GO button. A list of firewall software will appear.
3. You can filter the list by Operating System (OS), licenses (Free, free to try, or all licenses), and Categories (Windows, Mac, Mobile). Select the filters that apply to you and your computer. Make sure you select FREE when selecting from the licenses dropdown. Click the filter button. This will filter the software list to what your looking for.
4. Go through the list. You can RATE the software by clicking on CNET Editors/Users under the Ratings column. I like to how both the experts and actual users of the software rate the program. Click on the software your interested in and read a little more about it.
5. Narrow down your selection and choose one by clicking on its name.
