Write a Book Review

Have you ever thought about writing a book review? You can write a quality book review for readers, librarians, and booksellers. Are you an avid reader who is familiar with a genre? With your knowledge and experience of what makes a good story, you can write a book review.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Notepad or laptop to record notes to include in your book review.
  1. Step 1

In recalling a book and reviewing the effect it had on you, make some written notes about what points you want to discuss in your book review.

  2. Step 2

Write one paragraph for each point you are going to make about this book. Each paragraph should support the importance of the point your are discussing.

In your first paragraph, carefully choose words and phrases to persuade your reader that you have something to say of importance.

  3. Step 3

As you get your mind in gear, pretend that you are talking to a friend rather than writing like a professor or teacher writing to students.

  4. Step 4

In your first paragraph, name the author and the title of the book. What is the theme of this book? This will tell the reader immediately if your review is a book they could be interested in.

  5. Step 5

How does the author approach their genre?
Your readers will want to know how this author handles this topic or category of books.

  6. Step 6

What do you like about this book? Why does this book stand out? Support your opinions with solid information or components of the book, without giving away critical parts of the book.

  7. Step 7

Include at least one paragraph of biographical information about the author. In particular, were there experiences or people in the author's life that lead him or her to write this book and include those characters?

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your audience in mind in establishing a tone.
  • Remember that your review should distinguish this book from other books in its genre.
