How to Write a "Change a Lightbulb" Joke

You've probably heard many jokes that begin, "How many [somethings] does it take to change a lightbulb?" You've probably even told a few. But have you ever written any? Well, now's your chance.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Think of the topic for your joke. This can be an occupation ("How many *psychiatrists* does it take to change a lightbulb?"), or any group you wish to make fun of ("How many *current administration members* does it take to change a lightbulb?"), as long as it plugs into the formula.
Step2
Think of stereotypes associated with the topic you have chosen. (Psychiatrists put responsibility on their patients, current administration members may deny things are wrong.)
Step3
Imagine how those stereotypes might interact with a lightbulb. (A psychiatrist might put responsibility on the lightbulb, current administration members may deny the lightbulb needs changing.)
Step4
Write a punchline that uses the interaction you thought of in Step 3.

Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: One, to tell the lightbulb that it has the responsibility.

Q: How many current administration members does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None, because they wouldn't admit the lightbulb needs changing.
Step5
Refine your punchlines. Every word matters in a joke.

Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: One, but the lightbulb has to really *want* to change.

Q: How many current administration members does it take to change a light bulb?
A: (in official voice)"There is nothing wrong with the lightbulb. Everything is perfectly fine, and the appearance of darkness is nothing to worry about."
Step6
Tell your new jokes to your friends. If they don't laugh, go back to Step 1 and try again!

Tips & Warnings

  • Delivery is important, so practice telling other people's jokes first.
  • Don't get discouraged; every joke writer makes lots of bad jokes before coming up with good ones. Dying is easy, comedy is hard.
