Delivering flowers is a dream come true for some people in the job market. There’s no boss looking over you shoulder during the day and people usually greet you with a smile. But there are some things you need to know if you want to be a flower delivery person. Following are some guidelines for being successful in this profession and getting the most from this rewarding job.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Maps
  • Delivery vehicle

Step1
Know the streets in your delivery area. This may be the most important part of being a flower deliver person. Study the maps of your town and surrounding areas and try to stay updated on new housing developments.
Step2
Study how addresses and houses are numbered. In most areas, for instance, when the odd numbers are on the driver’s left side, the addresses are in ascending order. When odd numbers are on the right side of the driver, they are in descending order.
Step3
Practice laying out your routes so you can be as efficient as possible. Determine which stop is closest to your starting point and then decide on the next logical stop from there.
Step4
Secure the flowers in your vehicle in a way so that they won’t tip over. Wet packaging can ruin the effect of receiving flowers and it can even cause the flowers to dry out and die quicker.
Step5
Smile as you greet the recipients of the flowers. If it’s a home delivery, the flowers are likely being delivered because it’s a person’s birthday, anniversary or other special event. Try to feel their excitement as you hand them their floral gift.
Step6
Enter funeral homes and hospital rooms with a sense of respect and compassion. Understand the emotions of the people in these situations and be as courteous as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Accept any tips with an attitude of graciousness. As a flower delivery person, tips are extremely rare because people aren’t usually expecting you.
  • Carry a cell phone with you so you can call customers when you can’t find their house. This will save a great deal of unnecessary searching and driving around searching for a house.
  • Don’t backtrack while you’re on your route if you can avoid it. This wastes time and fuel. With the price of gas these days, you should try to be as fuel-efficient as you can be.
  • Prepare to work long hours during the holidays, specifically Mother’s Day, Easter, Valentine’s Day and Christmas. These are the most profitable times of the year in the floral industry because this is when they get the most orders.
