Things You'll Need:
- Books on yoga philosophy
- Instruction in pranayama
- Meditation practice
-
Step 1
Practice the yamas (restraints) and niyamas (observances). Yoga is more than physical exercise. It is a science and a philosophy with an ethical and moral foundation. The yamas and niyamas teach us how to live in the world. If we follow them, we develop mental and spiritual strength and purify the mind.
-
Step 2
Practice good deeds. If we help others without the expectation of reward then we purify our heart and mind.
-
Step 3
Introspect. Don't be led around by your thoughts, swinging from one emotion to the next. Watch your mind. Sit for meditation and observe the thoughts that come into your mind. Come to understand that you are not your thoughts and you can learn to control them.
-
Step 4
Do kirtan. Kirtan is the practice of singing the Lord's name. According to yoga, this is the fastest and surest way to purify your heart and mind and reach God. Everyone loves music. Spiritual music calms and elevates the mind.
-
Step 5
Practice pranayama. This practice brings about control of the mind through retention of the breath.
-
Step 6
Practice contentment. Learn to distinguish between what you want and what you actually need. A mind unchecked will always seek more. Count your blessings and be appreciative of everything you currently have.
