Mouna is the spiritual practice of not speaking. Although a vow of silence is practiced regularly by serious students of yoga, it is not practical for everyone. Constant talking distracts the mind and keeps it turned outward towards worldly objects. However, there are ways to control our speech and conserve the energy for higher spiritual purposes.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose your words carefully and think before you speak. Is what you're saying necessary or just idle chatter? Is it gossip? Always consider what effect your words will have on other's feelings.

  2. Step 2

Don't argue. Arguing wastes energy and creates bad feelings. Everyone has their own beliefs, opinions and views. Avoid trying to convince someone of your point of view.

  3. Step 3

Don't exaggerate. Only say what is true and necessary.

  4. Step 4

Watch the company you keep. Do your friends curse, gossip, complain and talk non-stop? Are those you associate with a source of inspiration or are they a drain on your energy? Do they drag you deeper into worldly life or are they also on the spiritual path?

Tips & Warnings
  • Mental mouna can be practiced daily by controlling what you think and what you say.
  • Try to practice not speaking for one hour every week.
