Whether you're traveling to Boston for a weekend trip and want to look like a local or you're moving to Boston for school, you're in for a treat when it comes to fashion. While Boston isn't known for it's high fashion scene, it does have a style all it's own. Of course, like anywhere else, there's a huge range when it comes to clothing, but classic Bostonian style means going back to high quality basics.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Many people consider the Boston style to be classically "yuppie," and what they mean is that it's very clean cut and preppy, but with a flair that keeps the clothing looking modern. Keeping this in mind, it's a good idea to start with the great American piece of clothing--jeans. Find a pair with great lines that is just the right length for a pair of flats.

  2. Step 2

No matter what time of year, Bostonians are big on sweaters. During the summer they wear cardigans over floaty dresses, and in the winter they layer them over collared shirts. Invest in a few great sweaters in bright colors to wear with jeans, black slacks, or a pencil skirt.

  3. Step 3

Look for classic looking jewelry. Not everything has to be real, but should have clean lines. Pearls, silver beads, and diamonds all go with the preppy look of Boston.

  4. Step 4

Find a great three-season coat, i.e., one that is light enough to wear through the spring, during summer storms, and at the beginning of fall. A classic trench is a good selection for most.

  5. Step 5

Start a collection of scarves. Boston is a very European looking city, and like Paris the women here are fond of scarves. Loop it around your neck twice, pull it through a single loop, or just drape it over your neck; light silks and pashminas for the spring and fall, and heavier knits (chunky cottom, cashmere, wool) for the winter.

  6. Step 6

Ballet flats, loafers, leather boots, and leather sandals are all popular choices to go with this classic wardrobe. Make sure everything is comfortable, though. Boston is a city to walk through.
