How to Write a Cover Letter for a Medical Assistant Job

How to Write a Cover Letter for a Medical Assistant Job thumbnail
Candidates must demonstrate they possess the skills required for a medical assisting job.

Similar to other professionals, cover letters give medical assistants a chance to demonstrate their experience and highlight their professional accomplishments. Because medical assistants fall into either clinical or administrative roles, it is important that candidates clarify where their skill set lies and how their qualifications match up with employer requirements. Cover letters should follow the standard business letter format and clearly reference the medical assistant position. Candidates should also explain what makes them stand out from other applicants.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your name, address and contact information at the top of the letter. Position your address in the center or upper left-hand side of the page. Write the date two lines below your address. Place the employer's name, title, company and office address two lines underneath the date.

    • 2

Write the salutation using "Dear," followed by the hiring manager's title and last name two lines below the address. Place a colon after the name. Use their job title if you do not know their name or gender. Resort to using "Dear Sir/Madam" or "To Whom it May Concern" if neither the title nor name are provided in the advertisement.

    • 3

Start your intro paragraph by stating where you saw or heard about the job listing and why you are applying for the position. Express your interest and provide a brief statement that summarizes your work experience, and qualifications for the job.

    • 4

Choose one or two job experiences to elaborate on in the body portion of your cover letter. Highlight clinical and administrative medical assisting jobs where you worked directly with physicians, nurses and other medical personnel. Strengthen your candidacy by showing how your responsibilities related directly to the medical assistant role. Give examples where you were able to cut costs, save time or overcome significant challenges.

    • 5

Make the last paragraph your conclusion. Let the hiring manager know when you will be available to meet and discuss the position further. Clarify how and when they can contact you to arrange for a discussion or interview. Attach your resume and mention that it is available for their review should they need further information.

    • 6

Sign off with a closing two lines below the conclusion. Thank the hiring manager for their consideration and state that you look forward to hearing from them. Allot four spaces for your signature and printed name.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your sentences brief and succinct when writing the cover letter. Use strong action verbs and define acronyms that may not be known in the medical community. Avoid using business jargon and technical terms, unless it specifically relates to the job description or medical assisting functions.
