When it is icy outside, it is difficult to condition your dog and make sure that he gets plenty of exercise. Here is a cheap alternative to a "treadmill"and a safer alternative than going for a walk on the ice: "Doggy Situps". Whether your dog is a Show dog or a pet, keeping him physically active helps to contribute to his overall well being and also keeps him from becoming so bored in the winter when it is impossible to get out and take him walking.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a dog who is trained to sit, stand, and lie down
  • treats for the dog
  1. Step 1

Put your dog into a sit position. Give a small treat and Wait five seconds.

  2. Step 2

Now put your dog into a Down position. Wait five seconds.

  3. Step 3

Now Put your dog into a Stand position. Wait Five Seconds.

  4. Step 4

Start the whole thing over again. Now Your dog is doing "doggy situps". This is an excellent alternative to a treadmill, which is not available to many of us.

Tips & Warnings
  • Give small treats every so often for reward for the dog and he will be motivated to participate in this activity.
  • If your dog is obese, divide the daily food ration of kibble up and use part of the kibble for his treats.
  • This exercise must NOT be done if the dog is suffering from hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia.
