Window shades can be great for keeping out light and they can be quite attractive with the right window treatments. Unfortunately the nicest ones are usually not washable. Over time, they get stained or yellowed. Even though you can't wash them they can be cleaned and look terrific again with just a few simple steps. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • wallpaper cleaner
  • soft gum eraser
  • piece of thick towel or
  • an old sweatshirt (inside out)
  • corn meal or flour
  1. Step 1

Take the shade off the window and lay it open on a flat surface. A table is a good choice but protect the table and the shade with some towels or a plastic tablecloth for easy clean up.

  2. Step 2

Use the gum eraser to take off stubborn stains. Rub gently to avoid marring the shade's surface.

  3. Step 3

Put the corn meal into a flat shallow dish and dip the corner of the terry cloth or piece of sweatshirt into it, picking up a good bit of the meal. Rub the corn meal onto the shade using a gentle swirling motion.

  4. Step 4

Substitute plain flour if corn meal isn't available. If it doesn't clean thoroughly, you will have to try the corn meal later, as it works better.
With just a little time and effort your shades should look new again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rub gently with the cornmeal, taking care not to mark or damage the surface.
