How to Make an Easy as Pie Crust Recipe

All good things start at the foundation. Pie is no exception. While pie crust recipes vary, there are a few keys for great taste and ease of handling. If you prefer to use your own recipe, just make one adjustment: substitute an equal amount of butter for any shortening included. Shortening is made of unnatural oils that aren’t at all good for you. Partially hydrogenated oils can’t be used by your system, or eliminated, so all that you consume stays with you for life. Also, they’re the source of carcinogenic Trans-fats.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 1/4 tbsp softened butter 1 cup all purpose flour Salt is optional: from a dash to 1/4 tsp 2 tbsp cold water Medium size bowl Rolling pin 2 square feet of wax paper Pie baking dish
  1. Step 1

Cut butter into the flour. With soft butter in a medium size bowl, pour in flour, and salt if desired, and cut together until it becomes crumbles the size you would find on a coffeecake. A pastry cutter can be handy for this, or use a scissors motion with a butter knife in each hand.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle cold water on, a tablespoon at a time, and mash in with a fork. After blending in the second tablespoon of water, the dough should ball up and clean the sides of the bowl. Now you’re ready to roll.

  3. Step 3

Cut a sheet of wax paper 2 feet by 1 foot and fold in half. Open and dust the inside with flour. Place the dough ball in the middle of one half and fold the other half over it. Roll the dough out flat within the wax paper, and nothing will stick to the rolling pin.

  4. Step 4

Dust the inside of a pie plate with flour. Peel the wax paper away from one side of the flattened dough. Place the dough into the pie plate and peel off the other side of the wax paper. Cut excess dough from around the edges, and add filling.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a second crust separately for fruit pies that are topped or lattice covered. This works better than doubling an easy as pie crust recipe.
  • If dough is sticky after stirring in water, add flour until reaching a desired consistency.
