Butter is a common ingredient in most bread recipes, such as the Basic Bread Recipe. If you are cutting back on butter or you want to make your bread softer, there are alternative ingredients you can use. Applesauce, for example, is used as a healthy butter substitute. Just use the same amount of applesauce as for butter. If you want to make a softer, richer loaf of bread, substitute the butter with the same amount of cream cheese.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cream cheese
  • Applesauce
  • Blue cheese salad dressing
  1. Step 1

When you look inside your refrigerator and cupboards, you will probably come across a few other items that can be used in your bread recipe to replace butter. Experiment with what you have.

  2. Step 2

Leftover salad dressings, such as blue cheese dressing, can be used to make a softer loaf of bread.

  3. Step 3

Apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil can all replace the butter in your recipe.

  4. Step 4

If you are uncertain if a milk based or oil based item will make a suitable substitute, test it in a basic one-loaf recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a journal of the changes and additions you make to your basic bread recipe.
  • Mistakes happen. Don't give up because one ingredient messed up a loaf of bread.
