Preschoolers love exploring and collecting. Plan a nature walk and then follow these steps to create a nature collage. This activity will help develop observation and fine motor skills.

From Quick Guide: Starting Preschool
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go for a nature walk. Around the block, at a park, in the woods--anywhere you and your preschooler can observe and collect nature items.

  2. Step 2

As you are walking, collect small items and place them in the bag. Suggestions include twigs, stones, leaves, flower petals, pine needles, and grass.

  3. Step 3

Bring your bag of nature items home and observe each of them more carefully. If you have a magnifying glass, use it. Ask questions, such as, how would you describe that? What color is it? Is it smooth or rough? What did it come from?

  4. Step 4

Help her to arrange and glue the items onto the cardboard to create a nature collage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many children find it easier to put the glue on the cardboard first, then place the items on the glue.
