Things You'll Need:
- 12 pieces of dowel rod, each cut to be roughly 18 in long. I bought the dowel rods and needed to cut them in half so you may also need wire cutters to "score" the rods and then break them in half
- Glue gun and plenty of glue
- Raffia (I like it best in the natural color, but you could also select to use holiday colors).
- Preferably an old-fashioned jelly jar or another type of jar with a large enough lip to wrap wire or raffia around for hanging
- A candle that fits in the jar (I chose red)
- A few feet of strong wire
- Wire cutters
-
Step 1
The edges should look like thisTo make your first triangle, you will want to place the dowel rods into a triangle shape with the edges hanging over. This is the part I missed originally and I would say it is the most important step. Glue the pieces into place. Then wrap each edge with raffia.
You will want to make two triangles like this. -
Step 2
This is how the two triagles should look when put together.Place them perpendicular to one another and then glue them together. Next you will want to wrap all of the edges with raffia.
-
Step 3
You will make two more triangles much the same as in the first step, although you will not glue the third side together (yet).
-
Step 4
Place two triangles perpendicular to one another and glue the edges together and then wrap all edges that meet with raffia.
-
Step 5
You will then take the first of the remaining two triangles and place it upside down, once again perpendicular to the other two triangles. Don't forget to glue it in place. Also glue the third side into place and wrap all meeting edges with raffia.
-
Step 6
Repeat the previous step with the fourth, and final, triangle.
-
Step 7
This is how the star will look when all four triangles are placed together, glued and wrapped.Wrap raffia around all of the meeting edges.
-
Step 8
Take a piece of wire that is long enough to wrap around your jar with about eight inches of wire remaining on both sides. Make a small loop at the end of each side.
-
Step 9
Take a second piece of wire and cut it to about the same length as the previous piece.
-
Step 10
Put both ends of the second piece of wire through the loops of the first. Place your jelly jar in the center and pull the tends until your wire fits snugly around the jar.
-
Step 11
Hang the jar from two of the center pieces of your star.
-
Step 12
Place your candle inside of the jar.
-
Step 13
I wrapped raffia until it became quite thick and looped it through the center of the top to use as a hanger.
-
Step 14
Hang your newly created Star of David from a shepherd's hook in your front yard.

on 12/13/2007 I guess that i am not able to go in and make changes once an article has been viewed! I was going to show a picture of the finished product. I also have some new ideas for the lantern so I may write an article on how to make a lantern from a Mason jar or jelly jar. Look for it in the near future! But the new tip I have for hanging the candle is to take wire and wrap it around the jar using a "crimping" bead to hold it in place. Leave 3 inches on each side to make "bunny ears" using a pair of pliers. Take a flower wire and loop it through the "ears" and tighten the ends. I have found that this makes a more sturdy hanger.
