Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Word processing software
- Paper
- Stapler
- Picture editing software (optional)
- Access to a copy machine
-
Step 1
Before you can begin making a class directory, you should first get the permission of the teachers and school. Having their help and approval is going to make the task easier and more enjoyable.
-
Step 2
If you are making a directory for your child's first grade class, then you need to decide if it should include all of the first grade classes or just the one your child is in this year. Another fun thing to include is an "About Me" section for the teacher to fill out.
-
Step 3
Send out a request for information. This usually consists of a piece of paper asking for the child's name, parents' names, birthday, address, phone number(s) and sometimes sibling names. You can also put a space for the parents to opt out of having phone numbers or any other information omitted from the directory. Make sure to send out enough for every student in the directory.
-
Step 4
Now that you know how big your directory is and the information forms start coming back to you, you can begin compiling the pages for a directory. Sorting alphabetically according to the child's last name is easiest. If your directory will have all of the first grade classes, then your directory will be broken up in sub-directories according to teacher homerooms.
-
Step 5
Start entering the information. This can easily be done in any word processing format. The cleanest look is to list each child and their information as a single column listing no more than four children per page.
-
Step 6
Once you have finished all of the children's information you can make a cover page. This can be as simple as "Mrs. Smith's Marvelous First Graders 2007-2008" or if it lists all the first graders, "Jones Elementary First Grade Classes 2007-2008."
-
Step 7
Print out a master copy and head to the nearest copy machine. Don't forget to get an accurate number of copies you will nees plus a few extra for teachers.

on 10/31/2008 This is a great idea. I may suggest it to my daughter’s teacher. She just started pre-k this year. I stayed home with her before, so she was limited on interaction with other kids. I thought yeah here come the playdates. She has had a few, but I have no clue on how to contact most other parents.

on 8/19/2008 This is really a great idea! With kids and parents sometime having different names, it can be hard to track down a phone number.
