Riding a unicycle is really fun once you get the hang of it, but getting the hang of it can be a challenge. With a little perseverance and determination, you could be impressing the neighborhood in no time. There is a little preparation before you can start learning, but you can be riding like a pro in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Unicycle
  • Helmet
  1. Step 1

You want to make sure that the unicycle is in good shape before you start to ride it. If it isn’t set up correctly before you begin, learning will take that much longer.

  2. Step 2

Seat height. The seat on a unicycle adjusts like a bike seat. You should adjust the seat so that when your leg stretches to reach the lowest point of the pedal, your leg is extended with still a slight bend in your knee.

  3. Step 3

Tire pressure. Look on the tire and it will tell you to what psi it should be inflated. It is usually about 40 pounds per square inch. Like a bicycle, it is much easier riding with the proper tire pressure.

  4. Step 4

Seat adjustment. The seat swivels, so you want to make sure the seat is adjusted so it is facing forward and not cocked to one side. If the seat is crooked, it will be in the way of your legs when they rotate and hinder your movement.

  5. Step 5

After this preparation, try it out. It will be very awkward to begin with, so the easiest thing to do is to find a long wall or fence the you can use for support. Make sure whatever you use will be strong enough to support your weight. Another option is to use ski poles or walking sticks for support.

  6. Step 6

The longest part of the process is getting more comfortable on the unicycle. The only way to do this is to keep using your support system (wall, fence or poles) and ride back and forth, back and forth. Eventually you will start feeling more comfortable.

  7. Step 7

When you feel like you’re getting the hang of it, try taking off without your support system. You are likely to make at least a few wheel revolutions and then fall. The best way to fall is to let the unicycle take the brunt of the wipeout. Try to land on your feet. Maybe consider wearing a helmet in the beginning. Keep trying to ride without any support. This is the only way you will eventually get better at it.

  8. Step 8

When you are able to stay on the unicycle for at least 30 seconds at a time, start practicing going over bumps, inclines and declines. Every small maneuver on a unicycle can be tricky at first, but the learning curve is quick. Good luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • It takes some people longer to learn than others. Perseverance is the key!

on 3/19/2009 I bought a unicycle, but I haven't learned to ride it yet. I think the seat adjustment is my problem. Thanks for the advice. Great article.
