Avoid the "I'm bored" syndrome with an imaginary trip to anywhere in the world. This is an opportunity to spend quality time with your child while creating a fun learning experience.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Talk with your child and pick three places that you would like to visit.

  2. Step 2

Do some research, either at home or at the library, and discuss the sites, animals and scenery at your chosen destinations.

  3. Step 3

Use art supplies to create these images and then use them to decorate three areas of the home, each representing a chosen destination.

  4. Step 4

Have your child pack their backpack with supplies for their "trip." The supplies should reflect where you are going. For example, sunglasses and suntan lotion for warm trips or a hat and scarf for cold trips. You can also include general supplies such as a camera, snack and bottled water.

  5. Step 5

Have fun with your trip. Position the kitchen chairs to resemble car seats and pretend to drive to each location. Use the camera to document your trip.

  6. Step 6

Visit each location and talk about what you see, hear or smell. For example, if you are visiting Alaska, make polar bears, snow capped mountains and pine trees. Talk with your child about animals that can live in extreme cold or how much daylight there is in Alaska during the winter months.

  7. Step 7

After your "trip" use the pictures to create a scrapbook or storybook.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't limit "trips" to far off lands. The zoo, a forest or a beach are great places to visit too.
