Tip a Postal Worker
Tip a Postal Worker

U.S. Postal workers are not allowed to accept cash tips but you can still give your mail carrier a tip during the holidays.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Never give a cash tip to a postal worker. They are not allowed to accept cash.

  2. Step 2

Choose a small gift as a tip instead. Whatever gift you choose, it should not have a value of greater than $20.00

  3. Step 3

Some great gift ideas for mail carriers are hand or foot warmers, gifts of food, gift cards for local coffee shops or fast food restaurants, or something you made personally to show your appreciation.

  4. Step 4

Deliver your tip gift personally. This is the only way to make sure your regular mail carrier gets the gift. Sometimes substitute carriers will run routes especially during the holiday season.

  5. Step 5

A handwritten note of appreciation along with a tip is a nice touch.

on 11/22/2008 Don't forget the people behind the counter at the stations, either. If you are a regular customer or have had superior service, bring in an item that can be shared by all the clerks - meat and cheese tray, etc. Sweets are the most common items given but not everyone can eat them.

on 11/22/2008 I just want to say that I am a mail carrier. I'm not a regular yet, but I want to stress that as a sub, I, along with all the other subs, do A LOT of work during the holidays. What people don't understand is that the regulars intentionally take the holidays off because they know how busy and stressful it is. Just because we're not the regular carriers on that route doesn't mean we shouldn't be thanked for our hard work. A tip isn't even necessary, just a thank you would be nice once in a while. What people don't understand is that us subs get the short end of the stick all the time. An example being, I've worked at the PO now for 2 years and every year, I've had to work on the holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Just because we're not regulars yet doesn't mean we deserve to be treated like we don't matter. Just thought I'd point that out. We subs are people too, jus

on 11/22/2008 Carriers get cash tips at Christmas all the time. They readily accept cash and do not report it to the PO or the IRS. Give em a break and tip them well. They deserve it for all they do throughout the year. Weather, dogs, tourist, kids, you name it and they deal with it including being there when you need them.
Give em a break & give em a tip.

on 11/22/2008 The first statement is untrue. Postal Carriers are allowed to accept cash and would prefer it to anything else given. Cash spends anywhere. Nobody checks or even knows when a carrier is given a tip from a customer so please think twice about gift cards.

on 11/22/2008 As a wife of a postal carrier your ideas suck. Hand warmers. Gift cards are the best idea. They are on the road all so a gift card to wawa, mcdonalds,or places they can relax and take their family to dinner are nice. And no has ever gotten in trouble for getting cash they have to punish the whole postal service.
