Things You'll Need:
- Books
- Duster (Feather or otherwise)
- Vacuum
-
Step 1
Decide on how you want to sort your books. Efficient ways include alphabetical or by genre (science fiction, thriller, biography, etc.). When you purchase a new book and read it, place it in the correct spot, so you'll be able to find it again later.
-
Step 2
When shelving your books, make sure not to pack them too tightly. Packing books too tightly in a humid environment can lead to the covers and pages sticking to each other, causing damage.
-
Step 3
Store your books well away from sources of heat, which can melt the glue in the spines, leading to page loss.
-
Step 4
Try to keep the books out of direct sunlight. Sunlight can distort the colors of the books' covers and spines.
-
Step 5
If you have a dedicated library or study with a large group of books, and you live in a humid environment, it may be worthwhile to invest in a small dehumidifier. Humidity can cause covers and pages stick together.
-
Step 1
Dust the tops of your books with a duster every few weeks to prevent dust and debris buildup.
-
Step 2
Dust the front spines of the books. Large spots of dust on the spine could lead to darker spots should the covers be exposed to sunlight or other atmospheric elements.
-
Step 3
Periodically check behind the books for mouse droppings or other signs of pests that might damage your books. Should you find mouse droppings, place a mouse-trap in the area, which you should also check periodically.
-
Step 4
Vacuum along the base of the books and the shelves to remove any dust or other debris.
