You stored your lights last year, taking them off the tree and not putting them in any kind of winding or on a cardboard to keep them in shape to use for the next year. They are a mess and you will have to plan to spend a hour or more untangle them. You have to now be careful not to lose any bulbs, or damage them in unwinding them and putting on a cardboard to set up again. You also have to test each one individually by plugging them in to see if the bulbs are good, or if they need to be replaced.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Extension cord to test the lights
  • Extra bulbs if you saved them from last year's usage
  • New replacement bulbs to use this year
  • Extra pair of lights in case some of last years don't work
  1. Step 1

You need to sit at the kitchen table, because this a messy job. Start by winding the strings on your arm, being careful not to pull or lose any bulbs while unwinding the strands.

  2. Step 2

When you have unwrapped at least one string, check the lights to see if they all work. If not, check each bulb to see if it is fitted properly into the opening.

  3. Step 3

You have to check and now have all of the lights on cardboards and your next step would be to put the lights on the Christmas tree. Put on one string at a time. Encircle the tree starting at the top and then on each branch of the tree. It depends on how large the tree is, as to how close you are going to place the string of lights.

  4. Step 4

Make sure that you are attaching the light sockets to the one proceeding it, so that it does not look tacky, and it looks like they are circling the tree. While putting up the lights be sure and try the lights to see how they are looking. Don't put all of the same colors together, spread them out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save the card board to wind the lights around again. Make sure that you take down the tree in order of the lights that you put up and mark them, lights (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), so that you won't get them tangled up again next year.
  • It may not be worth it to rewind the lights if they are extremely tangled, it is time consuming to perform the task of untangling. You may want to buy cheap lights.
