Worldwide, hostel traveling is appealing to those on a budget, or those who just love the seeing the world through hostel travel. If you’re traveling alone, it’s a great way to assure a fun night out. For whatever reason, many Americans do not take advantage of hostels in the United States. Here are tips on finding them.

From Quick Guide: Going Into Hostel Territory
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Our journey starts by visiting the Hostel Handbook website (see Resources below). This website specializes ONLY on hostels in the US and Canada, so their list and information is pretty extensive.

  2. Step 2

Once you’re on the main page, you’ll see a map of the US and Canada. They are separated by regions, select the region you are traveling to. Select your region.

  3. Step 3

Once you’ve selected your region you’ll be able to pick a more specific location. Usually, you’ll be able to pick out your particular city, however in some cases you’ll still be directed to more specific regions (i.e. “Southern California” or “Eastern Washington”). Select whatever is appropriate.

  4. Step 4

Now you’ll see a list of hostels. Generally, a price-range, a phone number, and a website is provided. Not all hostels have websites but a majority of them these days do. Browse around, call a couple places, compare prices. Many hostels offer lots of great activities and some allow access to certain transportation options (i.e. shuttles to and from a certain area), tours ( a hostel-only exclusive tour), and even food (some of these places even have free dinner a couple of times a week.) Point being, do some research, search for online reviews, call and e-mail these places, do as much as you can. Some hostels are incredible, others are miserable, I’ve experienced both and so will you, but you should always try to assure you’re making the right choice.

  5. Step 5

Once you’re ready to book your reservation, you can do so online or by phone. Hint: usually online is cheaper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Give yourself adequate time to plan. Begin searching a couple months before your trip. You usually do not need to book that far in advance unless it's a very high-traffic time of year.
