For some journalists, press releases are just documents that tend to accumulate and end up in the trash bin. But for others, however, they can be a valuable tool with which to craft and create new story ideas. With the right information, press releases can easily be turned into great stories in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
First, in order to create a story using a press release, you obviously need a press release. Odds are, if you work in a newsroom there are plenty of these sitting around or in email inboxes. Find one that is both newsworthy and catches your eye.
Step2
Review the information carefully. See who is involved and ask yourself if you have all the relevant information to create a story.
Step3
Even if you don't require more information, call the contact that should be located on the top of the press release. This person will usually be more than happy to provide you with more information should you decide to write about it.
Step4
Ask the individual to elaborate on the story and verify that the facts they are giving you are in sync with the press release you have. Ask them for any vital information that seems to be missing or to clarify any contradictory statements.
Step5
When your story is complete, proof it for errors and make sure you have spelled the names of everybody involved and their titles correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • When meeting people who distribute press releases, ask to be added to their mailing list. Now you will receive all of their news in the event that you wish to write about them again in the future.
  • Don't be afraid to use sources other than those suggested in the press release. After all, it is your story.
