Christmas is a great time of year to get your whole family involved in a creative and crafty activity at home. Edible Christmas decorations are an easy, inexpensive and fun way to brighten up your holiday spirits and add a bit of pizzazz to your house.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pack of ready made sugar cookie dough
  • Decorations of your choice such as sanding sugar, sprinkles, royal icing, or dried fruits
  • 1 chopstick (for poking holes in the cookies)
  • Colored ribbon or ornament hooks
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  1. Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees and roll out your cookie dough to about 1/4 inch thick.

  2. Step 2

Using a variety of cookie cutters or freehand with a butter knife, cut out shapes in the cookie dough. Classics include snowflakes, Santa Claus, snowmen, and Christmas trees. You could also cut out letters, which you can then use to spell out names and holiday greetings.

  3. Step 3

Transform your cookies into beautiful ornaments with your decorating supplies. Sanding sugar gives a lovely sparkling effect to snowflakes and snowmen.

  4. Step 4

Poke a hole in the top of each cookie using a chopstick. This will allow you to hang it later.

  5. Step 5

Bake the cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet until just golden, about 12 minutes or according to the directions on the package. Be careful not to overcook your "ornaments".

  6. Step 6

After cooling completely on a wire rack, thread your ribbon through the hole in the cookie and secure the loop at the top with a bow. Then hang on your Christmas tree or around the house.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once the cookies are cooled, you can paint with colored royal icing.
  • Hang your edible ornaments by your stockings with a glass of milk as a tasty treat for Santa Claus.
