How to Wrap a Painting

Paintings, large or small, framed or on a stretcher, are delicate objects that should be handled with care. If wrapped incorrectly or transported without any protection, their surfaces could be chipped, scratched, or otherwise damaged. Although art restorers and conservators exist to help when these occasions arise, it is best to avoid the situation by taking the proper precautions and wrapping your piece.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Heavy plastic wrap
  • Packing tape
  • Bundle wrap
  • Scissors or a box cutter
  • Cardboard corners

Step1
Clean your work surface, removing any dust or debris. Lay out the heavy plastic wrap and brush off any dust that may have settled on it.
Step2
Place the painting face down on the plastic wrap and fold over the sides as if wrapping a gift.
Step3
Pull the plastic taut and secure with packing tape. Then wrap the four sides of the work tightly with bundle wrap to ensure it stays in place.
Step4
Place cardboard corners on each saide of the canvas or frame and secure it with more bundle wrap. Indicate on a corner with a marker which side is the top of the painting.
Step5
If storing, place upright rather than flat, making sure that the surface of the canvas does not touch any objects directly. It is a good idea to place slightly larger pieces of cardboard or foam core on either side of the painting to protect it.
