Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Credit card for charging
- Insurance for charging the cost of the prescription
- Doctor's written prescription
Step1
If you have a health care drug plan, contact them and ask if they will cover the original brand. If not, ask the pharmacist if there is a generic brand for your drugs. What is a generic drug, it is marketed and packaged in another form, and sometimes in a different kind of tablet. The reason it is cheaper, is that they didn't do all of the research that the original brand took to prove the effectiveness of the drug.
Step2
You should know the types of generic drugs. There is a generic equivalent and a generic alternative. The equivalent is basically the same as the original brand. However, the alternative is not. It does not have the same approximate effectiveness as the original brand. The doctor knows what would be best suited to treat your illness.
Step3
The original brands usually have a 20 year patent when they apply for the right to sell the new drug. The price is usually higher because it took a lot of research to find the drug, that was best suited to treat the illness. After the time has run out the price would sometimes be lowered.
Step4
The FDA does a lot of investgation of drugs. Most of the prescriptions are filled by generic drugs. The drug manufactures are a highly rated stock and will pay good returns on new drugs, if you are investing in the big companies.
