Search online. With the advent of the Internet, information is literally a keystroke away. Search your city with keywords such as guinea pigs, exotic animals, specialty, veterinarians, vets.

Ask friends for referrals. Ask friends and family where they take their pets. Online networking sites and forums all you to ask for specific help you do not know anyone who personally own a guinea pig.

Question your veterinarian. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most vets focus on cats and dogs, which are animals that are more common. Ask if anyone in the office specializes in exotic animals, specifically guinea pigs. If they do not, they may be able to refer you to someone who can help. If you question a specific treatment, don’t allow them to brush you off. Make sure all your questions are answered.

Ask for references. If you are uncertain about a vet, ask for references. Most veterinarians will give references freely. Follow up with the references.

Learn to recognize common illnesses in guinea pigs. If you can identify common illnesses in your guinea pig, you will be more knowledgeable and get your guinea pig medical attention in a timely fashion.
