Parents think getting their children into the entertainment business is fairly difficult so they don't even make the first step to try. However, with a few good tools and a few key knowledge points, you should be ready to give it a shot.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet
  • Digital Camera
  • Stamps
  • Envelopes

Step1
Utilize the internet to research different agencies in your area (locally is best). Things you want to look for include their current clientele, the age group they represent, and projects they've been associated with.
Step2
Dress your child(ren) in simple clothes. Rule of thumb is, "don't let your child's outfit be cuter than your child's face".
Step3
Have a miniature photoshoot with your child(ren). Take them outdoors (natural lighting is best) and snap a bunch of cute pictures (about 50-75 if possible so you'll have more than enough to choose from).
Step4
***If you don't have twins, skip and go to the next step***

If you have twins (identical or fraternal), sit them back to back and have them both look into the camera. The goal here is to have their faces side by side and at the same level.
Step5
Go through all the photos to see which ones bring out the best personality in your child(ren), choose 5-6 great ones. On the back of EACH photo, write your child(ren)'s full name, clothing size, age, hair color and eye color. Underneath, write your full name and contact number. Do this on the back of each one so that if your mailing envelope gets lost, agencies still have all the information they need to proceed in calling you.
Step6
Send out the same 5-6 pictures to as many agencies as you wish. Usually it's anywhere between 5-10 agencies that you'll send pictures to. If an agency is interested, they'll give you a call back within a reasonable amount of time.
Step7
Lastly, you want to apply for a minor's entertainment work permit: VERY IMPORTANT!!! Go to this website and fill out the work permit application form for your child, http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/DLSEForm277.pdf.
Step8
Once you've printed out and filled in the form with all the necessary information, go to the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement-District Offices website at, http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/DistrictOffices.htm. Here you'll find the nearest office to mail in the work permit application.
Step9
Lastly, if/when your child gets a call back and signed to an agency, allow them to take it from there! Make sure your child continues to have fun!!!

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't continue to call the agencies that you've sent pictures to see what the "status" is of your child. If they're interested, they'll call back.
  • Be mindful of the expiration date once your child receives their work permit. Don't let it expire before you've renewed it because the permit is very important for a working child.
  • Don't pay ANY money to agencies upfront!
  • Also, don't pay any money for professional pictures for young children. They grow up and their features change too fast, so it'd be a waste of your money.
  • Be sure to do some research on the agencies you're interested in.
