Create a New Flash Document

Getting started with Flash is fun and easy, and requires only a working copy of the program and basic knowledge of the principles of graphics and animation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Working installation of Adobe/Macromedia Flash MX or higher
  1. Step 1

On your computer, navigate to the installation folder for Flash and click on the icon to open the program. The program will automatically open a blank new document.

  2. Step 2

Click "Modify," then "Document" (PC shortcut Ctrl+J) to open the Document Properties window.

  3. Step 3

Set the dimensions (width and height). Dimensions are usually measured in single-unit pixels, rather than inches or centimeters.

  4. Step 4

Use the Background Color color picker to select a default background color. This color will remain constant through your entire Flash document and will show behind any drawings created on the working area (called the stage).

  5. Step 5

Set a frame rate. Flash is most often used for animation, so you have to define just how many frames will play per second (fps). The more frames per second, the smoother your animation and the larger your file. The default frame rate for the Web is 12 fps; television can be 15 fps or 24 fps; cinema animation is generally 30 fps.

  6. Step 6

Set the ruler unit; it's usually common to keep it as pixels. Changing the ruler unit will change the unit of measure for the document size.

  7. Step 7

Click "OK" to accept the changes and start working in your new document.
