How to Give a Unique Charitable Gift for Christmas

Heifer International is a unique charity in that they do not just hand out money to those less fortunate in the world, they give the gift of animals that can help improve lives. Much like the old adage of "teach a man to fish," Heifer works to help reduce poverty by supplying people and villages with producing animals such as chickens, cows and goats. Every Heifer recipient is expected to care for the animal, breed it and pass on the offspring to others in need. It is a wonderful way of paying it forward for those in need in this generation and beyond.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

1. Start at the Heifer International website (see Resources below). Browse through their catalog to see the many different animals that you can sponsor.
2. Choose the level of giving you are most comfortable with. A flock of chickens or ducks start at $20.
3. Add your choice to the shopping cart.
4. Complete your gift by filling out your personal information and credit card number. Hit "Submit."
5. Feel good knowing that you have just helped to improve another person's life.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are not comfortable giving the information over the Internet, give them a call at [phone].
• You can request gift cards for your donation. Each year we order seven flocks of chickens--one for each of our children. It’s a wonderful way to teach your children values such as compassion, giving and sharing.
• The animals Heifer International provides to the recipients can furnish them with eggs, milk, wool or other products that can help feed and clothe a family and be used as products to sell or barter.
