  1. Step 1

Orient the map to the features of the real world around you, as opposed to holding it with the north direction on top.

  2. Step 2

Identify major terrain features in the distance and minor features in your immediate vicinity.

  3. Step 3

Match those features to their contour line representations on the map, and pinpoint your current location in relation to those major and minor features.

  4. Step 4

Identify where you want to go.

  5. Step 5

Study the map so you'll know what to expect from the terrain ahead.

  6. Step 6

Move toward where you want to go.

  7. Step 7

Examine the terrain you're traveling through as you begin your hike, and chart your progress on the map.

  8. Step 8

Stop as soon as things in the real world don't match your expectations - a sign that you may get lost.

  9. Step 9

Take the time to pinpoint your location and figure out what terrain or map feature deceived you.

  10. Step 10

Stay oriented to the terrain around you, and always know where you are.
