How to Stay Safe at Strip Clubs in Mexico City

Mexico City is a dangerous place even for the locals. Pour on the criminal elements involved with strip clubs and you're asking for trouble. Here's how to navigate around the danger at said clubs.

1. Select the Club
   Most concierges at the leading hotels refuse to give out information about them. But taxi drivers and other locals know. I was brought to El Closet on Saltillo, 67 by a client one night and became hooked.
2. Use a Radio Cab
   Take a cab from your hotel or use a radio cab to get to the club. Never, never, never hail a cab from the street.
3. Acknowledge the Bouncers
   You think the thugs on the Sopranos are scary looking. Wait til you get a look at these guys. The U.S. equivalent of $5 in Mexican pesos will help break the ice on entry to the club.
4. Sit Back and Enjoy
   The girls there are quite friendly but be careful not to fall in love. Many a good man has been seduced by the exotic charms of these dancers. At El Closet there is an upstairs where you can enjoy a personal lap dance. They "guarantee" satisfaction even though there are no doors to the rooms and there are mamacitas sitting guard in the halls. Of course, no sex is to be obviously undertaken here. Si senor.
5. Tip the Girls Liberally
   They're working hard.
6. Tip the Bouncers Upon Exit
   Pay your bill and be sure to leave with a smile on your face and another tip for the doorman. You can leave with a girl, too, but that requires some negotiation. Unlike Brazil and some other places, you can sneak a girl into your hotel room in Mexico. If caught, you may need to pay the hotel a small guest charge.

   Make sure they secure a safe cab for you at the strip club. Tipping the bouncers helps insure safety here.

• Keep your wits about you at all times. I once lost a silver pen and left my Am Ex card at a club. Not a good idea.
