How to Have a Safe MRI Exam

MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a diagnostic tool that is essentially safe, because it does not involve radiation. Images are instead obtained by the use of a large magnet. But in order to have an accurate, productive exam, some precautions must be taken.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
You will be asked by the technician whether you have any metal in your body. This includes pace makers, metal pins, surgical clips and metal that may be lodged within the body due to work (welders and soldiers.) You must indicate any possible metal because the MRI is essentially a large magnet, and such metal will be drawn towards the magnet. You may not be able to proceed with the MRI.
Step2
Many MRIs require a series of pictures with an injected contrast medium. This substance enhances certain photos and helps with your diagnosis. It is injected into the body. You will be asked if you are allergic to shellfish, because this contrast medium can cause an allergic reaction in those sensitive to shellfish. It is important that you tell the technician if you have this allergy.
Step3
Once you are changing, you will be asked to remove any external metal from your body. This includes all jewelry, including body jewelry, any bras with underwires, clothing with zippers or snaps, and shoes with metal grommets.
Step4
When you are set up in the MRI machine, you will be asked to lie very still. This is important in order for the pictures to come out clearly. Remain as still as possible during the test. If you must move or you become claustrophobic, there is a button to press to alert the technician or you can simply call to them.
Step5
This step may be the most difficult: RELAX. If you are claustrophobic, you can have your doctor prescribe tranquilizers to keep you calm. Ear plugs are also given out by the facility to drown out loud MRI noises.
