The streets may look innocent, but Las Vegas directions have a mind all thier own.

After first moving to Las Vegas, I was stunned that I could not give directions to the pizza delivery man. He asked for a special type of directions, ones that are only understood by Las Vegans.

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • More Patience
  • Great Memory
  1. Step 1

Understanding the street names. Las Vegas is one huge maze of streets. The city is so large, they have trouble naming streets new names. So, they don't. In Las Vegas there may be three streets with the same name and different directions. The trouble for a new resident is that if they do not know to designate which "WHATEVER" street they are talking about, the receiver may well end up an hour away from the right spot in no time at all.

  2. Step 2

In Las Vegas, the blocks are longer than in other cities. Most of the time, one block in Las Vegas equals two blocks in another city. Consequently, you will have to account for the longer time it takes to travel only a few blocks.

  3. Step 3

Pay homage to the cross streets. Directions in Las Vegas are all about the cross streets. This secret direction hint, is one it took me years to master. Now, I find myself talking to friends across the country and they have no idea what I mean when I say, "At the corner of blank and blank." Residents of Las Vegas will need to put some serious time into learning where the major cross streets are in their area, because that is how everyone gets around.

  4. Step 4

Take help. Learning directions around Las Vegas will not happen overnight. Until you can grasp the idea of cross streets and long blocks, you will want to take printed directions everywhere you go.

Tips & Warnings
  • GPS systems are great, but Vegas grows so fast they are never up to date.
  • Never drive in the blind; stop and ask for directions if you are having trouble finding your way around.
