How to Decrease Car Fuel Emissions

How to Decrease Car Fuel Emissions thumbnail
Fuel emissions can cause smog and air pollution.

Fuel emissions are not simply controlled by our cars. We, as drivers, can reduce the amount of fuel emissions entering the air with a few simple changes to our driving techniques and cleaning habits.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your trunk. Full trunks mean more weight. The more a car weighs, the more fuel it will burn and thus the higher amount of fuel emissions. Cleaning a car's trunk will reduce the amount of unneeded weight in the car.

    • 2

Drive smartly. Fast accelerations and hard braking cause a car to reduce gas mileage. This reduction in gas mileage means your car is burning more fuel. Gradually accelerating and braking will reduce fuel emissions by reducing gas expenditure.

    • 3

Drive within the speed limit. Speeding burns more fuel, as well. When cars are driven within the speed limit, the gas expenditure lowers, and therefore there are fewer emissions released into the air.

    • 4

Have an emissions check. Many states require emissions checks yearly; others do not. Even if your state does not require fuel emissions tests, have your car checked to ensure all is working properly.

    • 5

Transport baggage in the car. The more air friction your car has, the more fuel burned. When transporting large items, try, whenever possible, to transport the items inside the car and not on top.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many cars are now equipped with fuel emission reduction qualities.
